One of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in the United States, Jackson Heights counts 138 different languages spoken among its many global communities, and this cultural diversity is seen and celebrated everywhere you turn.
A go-to spot for New Yorkers and tourists alike, it’s possible to explore the cuisine of the India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Tibet, the Philippines, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Ecuador and more within a few blocks walk from your front door. There are also great bars and pubs a short walk away.
The newly created Diversity Plaza frequently hosts movie nights in the warmer months and is the epicenter of community events and festivals, including Diwali “Festival of Lights.”
With a vibrant LGBT community, Jackson Heights has been the host of the Queens Pride parade, the second largest in the five boroughs, for over 20 years, and has a number of night-life establishments mixed in with the restaurants, grocery stores and spice markets of the area.
Jackson Heights is a biker’s dream with bike paths leading east to Corona Park and west to Sunnyside, Woodside, Astoria, the Queensboro Bridge and Midtown Manhattan.
Travers Park, a 7-minute walk from the Birchwood House, has a newly designed children’s playground, basketball courts, game tables, picnic areas, and areas for handball, tennis, and roller hockey. It’s also home to the 78th Street “Play Street” where the Jackson Heights Greenmarket is held every Sunday, year-round.
We are also a short subway ride away from Citi Field (home of the New York Mets), the USTA Tennis Center (home of the US Open), the New York Hall of Science and Queens Zoo!
